Drone inspection services

We deliver and continously develop two key services to utility companies and other infrastructure, asset owners

We provide high quality data on condition and degradation of infrastructure to be directly integrated to existing systems for future reference and use.

We support data handling and investment planning. This is a hands on operational service powered by data and software to identify and reap benefits from avoiding immediate failures and postponing reinvestments where possible.

Rules of thumb in drone inspections

Inspection with drone can often be done with assets in operation. Sewage systems are generally inspected in operation. Here are a couple rules of thumbs when considering drone inspections:

  • The dimension should be no less than 800 mm.
  • In operation dimension should be no less than 1.200 mm.
  • Length between access point (e.g. manholes) should be less than 150 meters.
  • Inspection of 150 meter of sewage system takes around 25 minutes including setting-up, inspection and packing down.
  • Length inspected per full working day is generally 1 – 1,5 kilometers in case of, for instance, sewage systems.

Inspection with drone is possible because is does not require GPS signal. It runs on its own signal and returns to point of departure in cause of unexpected loss of signal.

The picture recognition machine learning model is tailored to sewage systems. Regardless, inspections have been done in various technical assets with restricted access and poor safety environment in case of inspections.

Different structures have been inspected using drones

Incinerators, storages, technical buildings above and below ground, chimneys etc.

What is condition and degradation of our most critical assets?

We deliver high quality data on condition and damages detected on individual assets, e.g. a specific sewage pipe id. The quality data is 4K video and 3D point cloud model.

The 4K video is processed using advanced picture recognition and machine learning. This instantly identifies points of interests, i.e. damages or causes for concern. Thereby, the utility companies or asset owner does not have to go through hours of images. Instead, they can fast forward to specific points of interest, view the damage and plan for maintenance
The utility companies can add very precise geo location of assets and updated measurements on the infrastructure. Precise localization and updated measurements are often relevant when preparing more extensive repair and maintenance work on the assets.

Asset inspection is done using different tools suitable for the purpose, i.e. drone, boat or rover.

We cooperate with companies on securing quality insights in these 7 steps:

  1. We talk and define assets and area to be inspected.
  2. We go over detailed plan covering timeline, specific area, access and security.
  3. We consider if inspection can be done in normal operation and coordinate necessary steps (bypass, halt of operation), if it is not the case.
  4. We arrive at site on day of inspection. We prepare and execute inspection, normally with local employee present at site.
  5. We access inspection data and structure it to meet the utility companies requirements.
  6. We process data using our picture recognition software to identify possible points of interest, i.e. damages and causes for concern. Read more about points of interest model here.
  7. We go through results, deliver data and make sure data can be stored in the company’s systems for future use.

Results
Access to assets at lower costs and with less work safety issues.
Updated and accurate insights on condition of assets in operation.
Less time going through data and more time spend on planning and mitigating actions.

Data handling and investment planning

How do we prioritize reinvestments while balancing runtime and cost?

We support utility companies in optimizing asset planning. Thereby, the companies are certain to properly balance runtime of assets and costs of reinvestment. The companies avoid critital failures without over-investing in the assets.

We cooperate with companies on data handling and planning in these 7 steps:

  1. We go through existing data and design future structure, i.e. including inspection data. We qualify and enrich data in cooperation with key stakeholders in case of missing values
  2. We analyze, process and present asset data concerning condition and criticality. This is done using standard reporting tools and GIS.
  3. We determine criteria for planning and prioritization of investments in specific assets along with possible types of maintenance and investment.
  4. We run investment plan and go over first results concerning targeted assets, amounts spend and types of investment. This may also involve plan for structured data acquisition on condition of assets going forward.
  5. We adjust and realign plan to strike the right balance between costs and runtime of assets.
  6. We design and present processes and tools for future planning and updating of planning. Thereby, the company has planning processes and data in place covering assets for years to come.
  7. We hand over tools and data to utility company and train personnel in applying the tools and in updating with new data.

Results

Enriched data utilized in asset planning.

Planning and prioritization with budgets balancing condition and criticality.

Grounding new data and tools in company for ownership and process improvement.
